The Surrey School District was the first school district in
British Columbia to offer a new French as a second language program for Grade
6 students.
Intensive French (IF) was developed to improve the communication abilities
of students taking French as part of the regular core curriculum. Intensive
French is a program in which students use French in real communication contexts
for extended periods of time. It started in Newfoundland and Labrador in 1998
and is now offered across Canada. The Surrey School District added this
program of choice in 2004 and now has intensive French in 5 elementary schools
(with a follow-up program in 3 secondary schools). The Vancouver School District
added the program in 2007 with two schools and now offers it as a district
program. IF is also offered in the Rocky Mountain School District (in Invermere)
and Mission. Coming to Vancouver in September 2010 are two district program
locations: Fleming
Elem. and Franklin Elem.
