What is an e-portfolio?

• An e-portfolio is a collection of a person’s work that has been developed over time. It shows what he or she has done during a course, program or career.

• An e-portfolio is a personal digital collection of information describing and illustrating a person's learning, career, experience and achievements (Europortfolio.org).

• e-Portfolios provide "a way for self-reflection on the process of learning and a way to celebrate the achievement of knowledge, skills or competencies you’ve acquired over time. They show something about your accomplishments, the breadth of skills and how you acquired those skills.” (Karen Belfer, Community of Practice Coordinator for the e-Portfolio Project, UBC).

• e-Portfolios are more than simple collections of artifacts; given their developmental character over time and/or institutions and organizations, they also facilitate reflection, reevaluation and the management of the learning progress (Electronic Portfolios in Education, Europe)

• UBC's e-portfolio includes a section related to the Attainment of Standards Report (ASR) which relates to the BC College of Teachers Standards. Teacher candidates must provide evidence related to their experience during the BEd program relative to these 8 standards. UBC must provide proof of completion of an e-portfolio by each teacher candidate in order that they may be certified by the BC College of Teachers.

• Teacher candidates have a great deal of autonomy in deciding how to compile their e-portfolio; however, formatted examples and e-coach support are provided to streamline the process. Checkpoints take place during their EDUC 316-Communication class as well as during the practica to ensure that events, reflections, samples, and personal and professional growth are noted throughout the year.

• e-Portfolios are shared and celebrated in the third semester on campus. The e-portfolio is compiled on a CD that is stored in the Teacher Education Office and may be audited by the BC College of Teachers. Many teacher candidates use their e-portfolio as an audio-visual aide in job interviews, and it is hoped they will continue to develop and share them during their teaching careers.
