PoT/COM Team 2010-11

Frank Baumann
- Problem-based Learning
I retired from the North Vancouver school district after 34 years. The last 18 years I was in the role of an elementary principal. I am happily beginning my seventh year at UBC. Philosophy of education is a topic I like reading and thinking about. In my spare time, I am trying to become a better photographer.

Denise Beck - Kindergarten/Primary
This will be my second year as a Faculty Advisor with TEO in the KIPP program. I am seconded from the West Vancouver District where I have taught for the past 16 years, teaching grades K through 7. I balance work with my family, friends and favourite travel spots - Spain and Costa Rica (my Spanish is dreadful). I love skiing and hiking, and I am learning to play golf (it is a dumb sport). I enjoy cooking and eating good food, reading and gardening.

Adrienne Boulton-Funke
- Secondary Art
I have taught Visual Art in an art gallery and elem, middle and secondary in SK and BC for 15 years. I am doing a PhD in Art Education. The greatest joys in my life come from my family and teaching. My interests include traveling, kayaking, slow pitch & camping, although these are generally set aside by research and coursework -- examining teacher practice, student learning and impact of educational reforms on Visual Art in schools. I want to reinvigorate my art practice in ceramics and will when I figure out how to add 10 more hrs to a day.

Mary Brooks - Diversity
After more than 25 years of teaching in northern districts of the Prairie Provinces and in the Yukon, I returned to university with the goal of trying to understand the many inequities I saw in the often remote schools where I taught. I have been living in Metro Vancouver since 2001 and have been privileged to work with teacher candidates since that time. I enjoy all things musical and take pleasure in walking and hiking in and around Metro Vancouver. I also love to visit my daughters and grandchildren whom I’m trying to persuade to move to Vancouver.

Dot Clouston
- Problem-based Learning
Both my teacher training and my beginning years as a teacher were in Newfoundland. Since 1982, my teaching home has been in Richmond where I taught Kindergarten to Grade 5. Presently, I am on a secondment from my school district and working in as an Adjunct Teaching Professor. I teach several sections of Math Education with various cohorts through EDCP. In Sept.2008, I joined the Problem Based Learning Cohort as a mentor and FA. In my spare time I can often be found packing or unpacking boxes to move house yet again.

Kristi Crowe
- West Kootenays Teacher Ed
Originally from Langley, BC, I have been living and teaching in the West Kootenays for the past 10 years. I began working in the Kootenay Lake SD as a primary teacher and have also taught intermediate grades and worked as a Literacy & Early Learning Facilitator. Most recently, I have been principal of a K-6 rural school. I have been seconded to coordinate UBC’s WKTEP Program. I have a passion for learning and enjoy living with my husband Mark and our young daughter Elise in Nelson, where I love to ski and mountain bike.

Alison Diesvelt

I taught as an elem. generalist in Vancouver since 1998 and prior to this worked for 13 years as an artist-in-residence with the VSB, Artstarts and the Royal Conservatory's "Learning Through the Arts" program. I am passionate about developing an integrated curriculum that incorporates social justice issues, sustainability, SEL and the arts. Favourite travel spots: Europe, Turkey, Egypt, Barbados, Mexico & Tahiti. I enjoy yoga, reading, cooking, gardening, walking in nature and spending time with family.

David Dunnigan
- Self-regulated/Middle Yrs
After a misspent youth practicing law, I found my true vocation in teaching. I’ve been teaching Grade 4/5 in Coquitlam for the past 6 years; prior to that I was a middle school teacher. I am a graduate of UBC.several times over (incl.the BEd program. My wife Kim is a teacher in Richmond, and my daughter Teresa is an accomplished horseback rider. My leisure time is spent walking my hyper-active dog Kira, driving my daughter to the stables, and sometimes teaching guitar to adults through the Vcr Moveable Music School and the Georgia Strait Guitar Workshop.

Bruce Gurney
- Secondary Science
My teaching responsibilities are shared between the Faculty of Education where I am an instructor for Secondary Science Methods, PoT and COM in the fall term, and Sutherland Secondary in North Van where I teach Science and Geology in the spring term. I thoroughly enjoy living in the balance point between theory and practice that this appointment affords me.
My passions are defined by some of the things I like to hold in my hands: a kayak paddle, a hiking stick, a passport, a rock hammer, and the handlebars of a big, black motorcycle.

Eric Hanson
- Secondary Science
Eric is in his third season with PoT after a 33 year career in Richmond, teaching chemistry, biology and general science, as well as history and socials. A year's teaching exchange in Adelaide South Australia made him an Aussie-o-phile and a passionate wine lover. Besides teaching adolescents and teacher candidates, Eric has spent decades running wine appreciation courses in Metro Vancouver. Eric lives in Steveston with his wife, Leah, and has two daughters, Robyn and Erin, both whom are UBC alumni. His other interests include cooking, jogging, reading, and the outdoors.

Sylvia Helmer - Teaching English Lang Learners
My love of learning and teaching bring me to this role in the TELL teaching cohort - after 3 decades of teaching at a wide range of levels, in several subject areas and support roles, and in some rather unusual places. Roles in Vancouver have included student support as classroom teacher or support teacher, teacher support as district consultant and, most recently, Manager of the District Reception & Placement Centre.
