I have taught for the VSB for 22 years--at Vancouver Technical and then at Point Grey Sec. I have been the president of the Vancouver Secondary Schools Athletic Assn for the last 3 years. Have coached numerous teams, incl. asst coach to the UBC Thunderbirds Women's Soccer team for the last 6 years. Did a Masters in HKIN focusing on Coaching. Apart from teaching and coaching I race my bicycle in local races in the spring and summer and spend the rest of the year preparing for the race season.

Spent half of my career teaching English, Art and HEc at the high school level and the other half teaching Grade 7; I enjoy gourmet cooking, reading (belong to the same book club for 30 years), fishing, canoeing and lazing away the summers in the Cariboo and part of the winter in Maui.

I also work in the Early Childhood program, develop and teach online courses for teachers, work with teachers who are updating their skills, and teach EDST (social justice) classes. I have been an educator for over 20 years in Canada, Australia, Mexico, West Indies and Brazil. This year I was honored by being awarded the Sessional & Lecturer Teaching Award.
I love having adventures, traveling and playing with my two young children and husband and am actively involved in community activities, incl school PACs.

I retired from the North Vancouver school district after 34 years. The last 18 years I was in the role of an elementary principal. I am happily beginning my sixth year at UBC. Philosophy of education is a topic I like reading and thinking about. In my spare time, I am trying to become a better photographer.

I was born in Vancouver, attended Vancouver public schools, began working at the Vancouver School Board in 1967 as a gardener and janitor while attending UBC and SFU and retired in 2006 as an elementary principal. Been at UBC ever since - love working with student teachers and my teaching partner, Caroline Krause. Met my bride when I was 14 - been together ever since. We have two great sons

I have been a second language educator for over 20 years. Taught Core, Extended and Immersion French at both secondary and elementary. Most recently worked as an Education Coordinator for Second Languages and thoroughly enjoyed mentoring and coaching teachers. In my spare time, I run a B&B on Bowen Island and enjoy preparing special breakfasts for my guests.

 


Adrienne Boulton-Funke

I have taught Visual Art in an art gallery and elementary, middle years, and secondary schools in Saskatchewan and BC for 15 years. I will finish my MA in Art Education in 2009 and will start the PhD program this September. The greatest joys in my life come from my family and from teaching. Outside of that, my interests include traveling, kayaking, playing slow pitch, and camping, although these are generally set aside by research and course work. My research interests are primarily examining teacher practice and student learning in Visual Art and the impact of educational reforms on Visual Art in schools. I want to reinvigorate my art practice in ceramics, and I will when I figure out how to insert 10 more hours into a day

Wendy Carr, French/FLAGS
Coquitlam teacher of French, Gifted, Tech Ed., EAL since 1976; Instructor at UBC since 1995;
Intensive French helping teacher for Surrey & Vancouver since 2004.
I enjoy running, cycling, writing and working my way along the French language-learning continuum.

I am an elementary teacher from Delta, where I taught French Immersion and Music. Currently, an area of interest for me is team building in teaching/learning contexts. When I have some free time, I sing in a choir and I also work on my snowboarding skills.


Dot Clouston

Both my teacher training and my beginning years as a teacher were in Newfoundland. Since 1982, my teaching home has been with the Richmond School District where I taught Kindergarten to Grade 5.
Presently, I am on a secondment from my school district and working in the Faculty of Education as an Adjunct Teaching Professor. I teach several sections of Mathematics Education with various cohorts through EDCP. In Sept. 2008, I joined the Problem Based Learning Cohort as a mentor and a Faculty Advisor.
In my spare time I can often be found packing or unpacking boxes to move house yet again.


Steve Collins

I did my doctorate in CUST at UBC in 2002. I have an interest in the democratic participation of students in public school classrooms. I have 25 years of varied experience teaching in Vancouver as a primary teacher, elem. resource teacher, consultant for Special Ed. Technology (SET-BC), using technology for inclusion.
This is my 12th year with CITE. I teach PoT, supervise CITE students on practicum, and teach SSED 320 for 5 cohorts. My wife, Debby, is a principal in Richmond, my daughter, Mika, attends Langara, and son, Zachary is in Grade 12 in Richmond. My interests: cycling, music, cooking, and complexity theory.


Nigel Deacon - 2 yr. Generalists - Surrey
I have just retired from the principalship in Surrey. I love to learn and I love to teach.
A short list of favourites: activities, teaching areas, books, people, websites, music, holiday spots, etc.
I am passionate about being a good yoga teacher. I am a dedicated long distance runner - not competitive but definitely aiming to win my age group in the Victoria marathon. I have travelled all continents except South America and Antartica. They are on my list next.


David Dunnigan

After a misspent youth practicing law, I found my true vocation in the classroom teaching children and adolescents. I’ve been teaching grade 4/5 in Coquitlam for the past six years; prior to that I was a middle school teacher in that District. I am a graduate of UBC.several times over, and an alumni of the twelve month education degree program. My wife Kim is a teacher in Richmond, and my daughter Teresa is an accomplished horseback rider. My leisure time is spent walking my hyper-active dog Kira, driving my daughter to the stables, and sometimes teaching guitar to adults through the Vancouver Moveable Music School and the Georgia Strait Guitar Workshop.

I am a retired Delta Principal as well as having taught in Williams Lake and the Dominican Republic. This is my 5th year teaching at UBC.
Favourite activities include attempting to golf and playing with my new grandson.

Bruce Gurney

My teaching responsibilities are shared between the Faculty of Education where I am an instructor for Secondary Science Methods, Principles of Teaching, and Communications in the fall term, and Sutherland Secondary in North Vancouver where I teach Secondary Science and Geology in the spring term. I thoroughly enjoy living in the balance point between theory and practice that this appointment affords me.
My passions are defined by some of the things I like to hold in my hands: a kayak paddle, a hiking stick, a passport, a rock hammer, and the handlebars of a big, black motorcycle.

Eric Hanson

Eric is in his third season with PoT after a 33 year career in Richmond, teaching chemistry, biology and general science, as well as history and socials. A year's teaching exchange in Adelaide South Australia made him an Aussie-o-phile and a passionate wine lover. Besides teaching adolescents and teacher candidates, Eric has spent decades running wine appreciation courses in Metro Vancouver. Eric lives in Steveston with his wife, Leah, and has two daughters, Robyn and Erin, both whom are UBC alumni. His other interests include cooking, jogging, reading, and the outdoors.

Sylvia Helmer - Teaching English Lang Learners
My love of learning and teaching bring me to this role in the TELL teaching cohort - after 3 decades of teaching at a wide range of levels, in several subject areas and support roles, and in some rather unusual places. Roles in Vancouver have included student support as classroom teacher or support teacher, teacher support as district consultant and, most recently, Manager of the District Reception & Placement Centre – where some 300 new immigrant students from all over the world are registered for school each month.

Heather Kelleher

I teach MAED 320, EDUC 316, and support aspiring teachers as an FA in Richmond schools. Research interests include early numeracy, spatial thinking, and the role of imagery in learning. Personal interests include garden design, golf, tennis, skiing, cooking, travel, and architecture.
Personal peccadillos include a sudoku fixation, the collecting of geometrically regular rocks and an attraction to left handed people.

Caroline Krause

Coordinates the Diversity Program, teaches PoT/COM, EDUC 420 (sec) and supervises practica.
Formerly a teacher (K-12) and administrator in Vancouver since 1979. Her areas of expertise are French Immersion, Inner City and Aboriginal Education. Throughout her career, Caroline worked hard to promote multiculturalism, racial harmony and academic success for all students. Under her leadership at Grandview/?Uuqinak’uuh Elem., important changes took place in the school, especially for Aboriginal students who began to experience significant academic success.


Brenda Lamb

I co-coordinate the PBL Cohort and teach a variety of courses at UBC, for both TEO and ECPS. I currently teach 2.5 days each week in a Richmond elementary school. I have also taught overseas for 9 years in Nigeria, France, Italy, and Japan, and have taught for 1 year in Nisga’a in northern BC.
September will mark the beginning of my 31st year of teaching.
Pastimes: Reading, visiting with friends, attending festivals (folk, film, food) and going on adventure travel holidays.

 


Denise LaPrairie

I began my teaching career in the coalmine town of Tumbler Ridge. After exhausting my finances replacing extension cords to feed my car heater, I decided to seek a teaching position in North Vancouver where I have taught and coached for 18 years. This is my second year as an FA for the FAME cohort and I really enjoy teaching POT and COMM with my colleague Janice Choy. My spare time is spent with my family and living the ordinary with my partner, Jennifer. My favorite destinations have so far been to the beaches of Tofino and Haida Gwaii. I think these are magical places, as one can see as far as the horizon and height will allow.


Mary Leah deZwart

I am a seconded teacher from Surrey, where I am a career facilitator. I have taught all around the province from Prince George to Quesnel to Kamloops, taking time out here and there for study at UBC where I obtained a Ph.D. in curriculum and instruction in 2003. The practical nature of home economics keeps my interest and satisfies my need to learn by doing. I spent three summers in Malawi on volunteer teaching projects, worked on home economics teaching resources and had two short items published in Geist - that's my claim to fame.

Has served as on the Board of Directors for the BCPVPA and on the Education Sector Committee for the Columbia Basin Trust. Kere and his wife live in Castlegar with a daughter working in Kenya and a son going to College.

I am a seconded elementary school teacher from Surrey. I have been fortunate to teach every grade from kindergarten to grade 7 where I have been researching effective teaching strategies to promote meaningful learning. I am thrilled to be part of the new Social Emotional Learning Cohort and look forward to some exciting times ahead. I live on campus and enjoy going for long walks with my husband, Dave. I have a cabin at Point Roberts where I spend time reading, tending my garden and playing board games with my family.

Keith McPherson- Elem. Literacy Focus
I’ve taught since 1984 in a variety of elementary BC contexts ranging from a one room public school in the Peace Country to a private school in Burnaby. For the last 13 years I’ve been teaching undergrad and graduate education students at UBC, UVIC & UPEI.
My spare time is spent with family gardening, kayaking, camping, swimming, and playing hockey (well…at least trying to catch that darned puck). My passions are traveling and reading children’s literature. The photo shows me as Severus Snape and my son as Harry Potter at the launch of the Deathly Hallows volume at Van Duesen Gardens, BC.

Maryam Moaeyeri - Secondary Generalists
Taught high school for 10 years; currently a UBC student. I think teaching high school is pretty much the best gig in town.
Pastimes include snowboarding and surfing...the net. I think Google is the second best invention ever, right after the internet.
I love to create even though I don't have a smidgen of artistic talent. For that reason, I'm a big fan of iPhoto, Photoshop, & Animoto.

Worked in England, Winnipeg, Quebec City, and North Vancouver. Taught all grades except 12. Main interest was social studies but moved to science and French. Worked on the Scholastic elementary science series. Love sailing, cross country skiing and cycling. Just crossed the Andes on a bicycle following Che. Working on my Spanish for half an hour a day. Completed the camino. Love French. Drive a citroen 2CV. Listen to Hardy, Souchon and my favorite is Cabrel. Have wife and 3 children and 3 grandchildren.

 

 

 

 

Carla Rae - 2 yr. Diversity & SREc
After 35 years in Richmond as a Primary Specialist and Head Teacher, I retired in 2004. To continue my passion for teaching and learning, I was fortunate to become a Faculty Advisor. When I graduated from UBC with my BEd and then completed my MEd, I vowed to return to continue my circle of learning. Family, puppies, rose garden, travel and reading fill my spare time. I also dabble in accounting for the family business. My husband refers to me as the CFO. My travel adventures have taken me to Alaska, Carribean, Mediterranean, South Pacific, Japan, Panama Canal, Europe, Mexico and several U.S. states.


Sue-Ann Reidy - French
I have taught FSL and PE in Richmond, been a consultant for Pearson Education, and trained student leaders for various conferences, and events. Some hobbies include sports, travel, and music. Swimming, France, and being in a teacher band are highlights. I am passionate about instructional strategies, mentoring, leading from the heart, and being a lifelong learner. “Aha” moments continue to refresh me. My son James teaches me new things every day.

Helen Robertson

I think my career has been charmed..... I have had a variety of wonderful teaching experiences from K to Grade 12 and have been the Delta Fine Arts Coordinator for a number of years. I'm thrilled to be at UBC again as a Faculty Associate, sharing my knowledge with teacher candidates. I am an artist/teacher, recently attending the International Center for Ceramic Education in Italy and hiking the Cinque Terre. I love to paint and express my creativity through clay. Naomi Ross - West Kootenays
I am an Adjunct Teaching Professor and Coordinator for the West Kootenay Teacher Education Program (WKTEP) in the West Kootenays. I have taught in both elementary and secondary school settings. In addition, I was a High School Special Needs Coordinator for 8 years. I am actively involved in school-based action research and the Network of Performance Based Schools. I am also working on a district leadership committee exploring school mentorship models. In my spare time I love to read and spend time with my 2 children, my Labrador retriever and my husband.


PJ Rusnak - Secondary Technology Education
PJ is a mother, teacher, multimedia designer and graduate student at UBC. With theoretical interests in activist game design, learning and cognition, I am trying to better understand how the world and the human spirit are shaped by the living landscape of technology. My dissertation research investigates what lies at the intersection of youth-driven design in immersive game-worlds and real-world issues of social justice. My favorite hobbies include designing, gaming, travelling and reading. I wish to send a warm hello to everyone ; -)

Randy Sangha

I have taught in Richmond for most of my teaching career. I started off with Business Ed. classes and branched into Marketing and CaPP, among other courses, including, most recently, Psychology and Law.
I'm a pop culture junkie, enjoy my high-brow reality shows (I justify it by saying it's dumb tv for smart people) and love listening to music that makes my soul feel good! I am a yoga newbie and boy, does my downward dog whimper a lot! I am a travel enthusiast as my life goal is to see as many of the natural and man-made Wonders of the World - fortunately, I've been able to cross off quite a few from my list.

For 34 years, Bruce taught secondary Social Studies, Economics, History, Consumer Education, English, Mathematics, Guidance, Counseling, and PE, coached many sports, sponsored clubs and 14 student study tours across Canada and the world.

Now, he absolutely loves working with teacher candidates at UBC, visiting his son, daughter and son-in-law, taking holidays with his wife, walking their dog and researching his family's interesting history.

Cristy Watson - Social Emotional Learning
I’ve taught in Calgary, San Francisco, Burnaby, Kamloops and Langley. For the past 22 years, I have supported students in Day Treatment Programs, District Behaviour classes and as a Behaviour Resource Teacher. I’ve also been a District Social Responsibility Contact and Restorative Action Teacher. I love to write poetry and fiction and I hope to finish my third novel this summer. I’d love to return to Loreto, Mexico and travel further up the Baja. I’m looking forward to this year!

 

Sandy Wohl - Secondary Science
Retired from Richmond in 2006 (also taught in Winnipeg). Currently Principal at a small, independent high school. Author and consultant on over 15 Science textbooks as well as self-publishing texts and a manual of teaching strategies. Unlike John Yamamto, Sandy's joints are getting too old to continue his regular jogs. He has switched to working out in a gym (although you might not be able to tell by looking at him). Sandy sings badly at the best of times. He joined Bruce & Eric in the SISO program last year.

Margot Filipenko

I have taught at UBC since 1998. Currently I am Acting Director of the Institute of Early Childhood Education and Research at UBC. I teach the reading and language arts methodology courses; children's literature courses and graduate courses in Early Childhood Education.
Passions: Co-chair of: The Vancouver Children's Literature Roundtable which brings together two of my passions reading and children's literature. I am also passionate about blues, theatre, and my family.


Jo-Anne Naslund

Jo-Anne currently works as an Education Librarian in the Education Library at UBC. She has worked as a teacher and teacher-librarian in schools in Alberta, BC and Melbourne, Australia. Her research interests focus on information literacy, teacher education, school libraries together with Canadian children's literature and adolescent reading interests. She has authored library publications and taught library courses in teacher-librarianship at the Universities of Melbourne, Alberta and British Columbia. She holds a BA, BEd, MEd.,MLIS.

Gary joined the Teacher Education Office after a varied career in the BC school system as a teacher, administrator and curriculum developer. He has taught in elementary, secondary and university levels as well as being an executive member of provincial, national and international arts education associations.
Gary’s role in the BEd program is student advisor, student awards, recruitment for the program as well as international recruiting and placement

Before coming to the TEO, John was a secondary Math teacher in Burnaby where he worked as a coordinator for eight years. Although John likes to dress in his brother's baseball uniform from time to time, he prefers marathon running. He sometimes runs to work, from Steveston. This maintains his happy disposition and helps him forget his brother's salary. John's other hobbies are attending his children's birthday parties and rescuing Anne from e-portfolio gaffes.
